National PLACE Roadshow Kicks off in Hopetoun

Where better to kick off a National roadshow than the stunning Lake Lascelles in Hopetoun? The newly established National entity, PLACE (Partnerships for Local Action and Community Empowerment), is dedicated to strengthening place-based approaches—ensuring communities have a voice in decision-making alongside governments on the issues that matter most to them.

Across the Wimmera and Mallee, five place-based entities, including By Five, successfully applied to host a visit, providing an opportunity to showcase not just our communities but the people who make them thrive. It was a chance to highlight the importance of local voices in shaping priorities and driving change to create vibrant, healthy places to live.

Beyond the breathtaking Mallee Bush Retreat, the visit reinforced the immense value of volunteering and the passion embedded in our communities. Discussions focused on the role of government and the corporate sector in recognising and supporting this human investment. We also stressed the need to differentiate between small rural communities and regional towns—acknowledging these distinctions is vital for shaping policies that effectively address local challenges and ensure equitable access to essential health and education services.

Not only have we found incredible local partners, but we are also more confident than ever in the power of place-based approaches to drive meaningful outcomes across the Wimmera Southern Mallee.
