Thrive by Five Advocate to Federal MPs on Behalf of Country Kids
In June, the By Five team, along with many educators, parents, and community leaders from remote, rural and regional areas across Australia, came together for the "Thrive by Five" online event. The aim: to convey to Federal MPs how crucial fit-for-purpose Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services are for our communities and to highlight the urgent need for targeted support and resources to ensure all country communities have equitable access to ECEC facilities.
We heard from ECEC directors in other states who shared similar challenges in recruiting and retaining staff. They spoke about the immense pressure on existing staff to manage their heavy workloads, fully aware of the community's dependence on them. Our own Tammy Smith, CEO of Yarriambiack Shire, highlighted how the temporary closure of the Hopetoun centre has caused a ripple effect throughout the community. For example, health care services for the entire town have become restricted because health professionals, who are also parents, are unable to go to work.
Frustrated parents echoed these concerns in the comments section, sharing their experiences. Their stories mirrored those of Wimmera families—tired, frustrated, and forced to campaign and advocate for the essential childcare facilities their towns deserve. As our Executive Officer, Jo aptly put it, "These facilities are so, so much more than a service — they are a lifeline for our communities."
The Hon. Minister Kristy McBain, along with Nationals Member Darren Chester, reiterated the Federal Government's bipartisan support for reform.
We all look forward to the Federal Government response to the Productivity Commission report due to be tabled at months’ end.
